At its 4th African Union Special Technical Committee Meeting on Youth, Culture and Sports (STC-YCS 4) Extraordinary Session held on Saturday 9th March 2024 at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel, Accra, the Ministerial meeting endorsed a recommendation by the committee of experts to declare Accra as the African Sports City 2024 until the next African Games.

The proposal for the declaration of Accra as the African Sports City 2024, as envisioned by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon Mustapha Ussif (MP) was welcomed as a laudable innovation by colleague Ministers and experts at the Extraordinary Meeting.
Ghana has made massive investments in the construction of international standard sporting facilities and infrastructure in readiness to host the 13th edition of the Games.

This feat was accomplished in the face of global challenges such as COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the country, under the distinguished leadership of His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic.

With this recognition, Ghana has the opportunity to capitalise on the available international standard sporting facilities, vibrant tourist economy and abundant youthful talent to promote social and economic growth for accelerated national development. Sports has emerged as a vehicle for sustainable socio-economic and cultural development.

Thus, regional, continental and even international sporting traffic could be channeled to Accra to promote African unity, integration and cultural exchange.

The country stands to benefit from the immense economic potential of being recognised as a centre of sporting excellence as it develops its sporting industry to ensure that investments made in the construction of facilities continue to deliver livelihood outcomes to the great people of Ghana and Africa.
