Tennis Foundation Ghana’s Open ITF J60 Accra Week 5 concluded with Sasha Natalie Chemidze of Zimbabwe and Prosper Okonkwo etching their names in ITF Junior tennis history, claiming titles at the National Tennis Centre in Accra.
The girls’ singles final proved a thrilling encounter, with Sasha Chimedze confidently taking to the court to claim her first title in Ghana, overcoming Alisha Ndukwu with a convincing straight sets triumph, 6-4, 6-1.
The boys’ finals featured an all-Nigerian matchup, with two-time champion Daniel Adeleye as the clear frontrunner to secure the title against third-seeded Ikenna Prosper Okonkwo.
Okonkwo defeated 2021 Tennis Foundation Ghana Open ITF J30 Accra Raphael Nii Ankrah in the quarterfinals and battled through to beat No. 2 seed Francky Hoimian of the Ivory Coast 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 for a spot in the final.
Coming into the final match on Saturday, he held the upper hand after a great performance in the tournament after losing the fourth-week title. Adeleye stands as the favourite to win the title, but Okonkwo started out strong, taking the first set through tiebreak 7-6(4).
Adeleye started the second set strong, but Okonkwo’s calm demeanour was too difficult to beat. After 4 hours, Okonkwo came out on top, winning 6-4 after one break.
Singles champion Sasha Natalie Chimedze of Zimbabwe and Lamiss Houas took the girl’s doubles title, beating Ghana’s Sisu-Makena Tomegah and Madagascar’s Iriela Rajaobelina 6-3. Boy’s singles finalist Daniel Adeleye and Israel’s Ori Hillel won the boy’s doubles title after defeating Nigerian duo Joseph Franklin Jimoh and singles winner Ikenna Prosper Okonkwo 5-7, 6-4, (10-7).
