The Black Stars of Ghana’s winless run stretched to four matches following a 2-0 defeat to Sudan in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Tuesday, October 15.

The match, held at the Benina Martyrs Stadium, leaves Ghana in a precarious position in their quest for AFCON qualification.

Ghana, still without a win in their qualifying campaign, struggled against a well-organized Sudanese side.

A single change was made to the starting lineup from their previous goalless draw in Accra, with Iñaki Williams coming in for Jordan Ayew in attack. However, the switch did little to spark Ghana’s offense.

Despite controlling possession in the first half, the Black Stars were ineffective in front of goal, failing to register a single shot on target from their four attempts.

In contrast, Sudan, with five attempts, posed more danger but were also unable to break the deadlock before halftime.

The game shifted dramatically in the second half when Sudan capitalized on Ghana’s defensive lapses. In the 62nd minute, Ahmed Al-Tash took advantage of a mix-up between Ghanaian goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi and his defenders to tap the ball into an empty net, giving Sudan the lead.

Just three minutes later, Sudan struck again. Mohamed Abdelrahman doubled the lead, slotting in a pass from Ahmed Yousif to put the game beyond reach for the Black Stars.

The defeat now leaves Ghana five points behind Sudan, managed by former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah.

With only two matches left in their qualifying campaign—against Angola on November 11 and Niger on November 19—Otto Addo’s side faces an uphill battle to secure their place in the 2025 AFCON tournament.
