Matchday 9 of the 2024/2025 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season kicked off on Friday, November 1, 2024, with two electrifying matchups. Medeama SC hosted Accra Hearts of Oak at the TNA stadium in Tarkwa, while Accra Lions welcomed FC Samatex at the University of Ghana stadium.

The highly anticipated clash between Medeama SC and Accra Hearts of Oak lived up to expectations. The first half was an intense, heated affair, with both teams creating scoring opportunities. However, the deadlock remained unbroken, and the teams entered the halftime break goalless.

The second half witnessed increased pressure as both teams sought the winner. Kwabena Boateng, Hearts of Oak’s 18-year-old forward, broke the stalemate in the 63rd minute with a stunning strike. Mawuli Wayo, a 21-year-old midfielder, sealed the victory for the Phobians in the 87th minute.

Despite Medeama SC dominating possession (58% to Hearts of Oak’s 42%), the visitors emerged triumphant. This result propelled Hearts of Oak up the league log to 7th from 12th, maintaining their status as the best away team in the league this season.

In the other fixture, Accra Lions sought to revitalize their season against FC Samatex. Abdul-Shakun Abubakari’s 43rd-minute goal put the Lions ahead, and they fought to protect their lead. However, Benedict Afful’s dramatic equalizer in the 90+2′ minute snatched a 1-1 draw for FC Samatex.

Accra Lions’ dominance in possession (61%) was insufficient to secure victory, leaving them with a share of the spoils.

The GPL matchday 9 action continues on Sunday, promising more thrilling encounters.
