The landscape of West African rugby took a monumental step forward with the official inauguration of the Union of West African Rugby Federations in Abidjan on Friday, March 7, 2025.
The historic event, held at the Ibis Hotel, saw key stakeholders from across the region convene to chart a new course for rugby development in West Africa.
The inauguration was overseen by Marcellan Zahoui, former President of Rugby Africa, and Charles Yapo, former Treasurer General of Rugby Africa and a representative of World Rugby.
The gathering brought together rugby federations from across the region, signalling a commitment to uniting efforts and elevating the sport’s profile in West Africa.
Elected as the first President of UFOAR, Lukas Gnogbo Koré, who also serves as the President of Rugby Côte d’Ivoire, outlined his vision for the sport.
He emphasized his commitment to developing rugby across the continent, with Côte d’Ivoire positioned as the rugby capital of West Africa.
Côte d’Ivoire holds a unique place in African rugby history as the only French-speaking West African country to have participated in a Rugby World Cup.
With the sport expanding rapidly in East, South, and North Africa, Lukas and his team have pledged to strengthen West Africa’s presence on the global rugby stage.
Herbert Mensah, President of Rugby Africa, expressed his gratitude to all involved in the formation of UFOAR and described the event as the beginning of a new era for rugby in West Africa, stressing the significance of unity in pushing the sport forward.
“As sport is a big business, it is necessary for nations to come together, work with governments, raise funds, and create better opportunities for all,” said Herbert Mensah.
His remarks reinforced the need for collaboration between federations, governments, and private sector partners to fuel rugby’s growth in the region.
The event received strong backing from the Minister of Sports and Urban Life, who commended Rugby Africa’s leadership and the collaborative efforts of the federations.
He acknowledged the positive trajectory of the sport and pledged continued government support to sustain its momentum.
With the formation of UFOAR, the region is set to benefit from increased investment, structured development programs, and enhanced international participation.
The initiative is expected to drive grassroots rugby, improve player development pathways, and position West Africa as a formidable force in African rugby.
The inauguration marks a significant milestone, and stakeholders remain optimistic that this unity will translate into greater representation for West African nations in global rugby tournaments, including future Rugby World Cups.
