At just 16 years old, Gilbert Ampiah is already rewriting the narrative of para-athletics in Ghana.

A student of St. Augustine’s College, Gilbert has recently achieved a major milestone in his athletic journey by successfully undergoing classification in the T44 sports class for high jump.

This classification not only recognizes his eligibility for international para-athletic competition but also sets the stage for him to represent Ghana at the 2025 Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting in Marrakech, Morocco.

Scheduled from April 24 to 27, this prestigious event serves as a qualifier for both the Commonwealth and Paralympic Games, making Gilbert’s participation a significant step forward in his sporting career.

Gilbert’s rise in the world of athletics has been nothing short of inspiring. Despite being born with a physical disability, he has shown a level of determination and passion that surpasses many of his peers.

Rather than letting his condition limit his ambitions, Gilbert has used it as motivation to pursue excellence in sports.

His journey is a powerful story of resilience, a reminder that physical challenges can be overcome with courage, discipline, and a relentless drive to succeed.

Over the past few years, Gilbert has demonstrated incredible progress in high jump, setting personal records that reflect both his talent and his work ethic.

In 2023, he cleared a height of 1.60 meters at Ekumfi Atwa, triumphing over several able-bodied athletes.

He followed that performance with a 1.82-meter jump at his school’s inter-house competition, and most recently, he reached an impressive 1.86 meters at a local meet.

These achievements highlight a clear upward trajectory and position Gilbert as a strong contender in any competitive field he enters.

The official classification process, which took place from April 21 to 23, was a crucial step in Gilbert’s journey.

In the world of para-sports, classification ensures that athletes compete in categories that fairly reflect their physical abilities, maintaining the integrity and competitiveness of the sport.

With this classification now complete, Gilbert is fully prepared to compete on the international stage, an opportunity he has worked tirelessly to earn.

Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Gilbert Ampiah represents something much larger.

He is a beacon of hope and inspiration for many young Ghanaians, especially those living with disabilities.

In a society where para-sports often receive limited attention and resources, his determination and success shine brightly.

His journey proves that with support, belief, and effort, young people with disabilities can achieve greatness and break barriers, not just in sports but in every aspect of life.

As he steps onto the international stage in Morocco, Gilbert carries not only his personal dreams but also the aspirations of a nation.

His presence at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan International Para Athletics Meeting will be more than a competition; it will be a statement of Ghana’s growing presence in global para-sports.

For Gilbert, this is just the beginning. For Ghana, it’s a glimpse into a future where more athletes like him are given the chance to soar.
