Ghana’s U-20 men’s national team, the Black Satellites, have been drawn into Group A for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside host nation Côte d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Tanzania, and a representative from UNIFFAC (Central African Football Federations’ Union).
The four-time U-20 AFCON champions last won the tournament in 2021 under former coach Abdul Karim Zito but missed out on the 2023 edition in Egypt.
With the draw officially conducted on Thursday, Feb 13, 2024, in Cairo, Egypt, the Black Satellites, under new coach Desmond Ofei, will be aiming for a strong campaign but face a tough challenge against the host nation, Cote D’Ivoire, DR Congo, Tanzania, and the UNIFFAC representative.
Preparations are already underway at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, as the team gears up for the tournament set for April.
This year’s competition will see the top two teams from each group advancing to the quarter-finals, with three of the best third-placed teams also progressing.
The Black Satellites are determined to secure a fifth U-20 AFCON title in Côte d’Ivoire and, in the process, earn qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
Notably, this edition of the tournament also serves as the African qualifiers for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile, with the four semi-finalists securing automatic qualification.
