Africa Games: President Akufo Addo commissions Borteyman Sports complex ahead of Accra, 2023

The President of the Republic, His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has commissioned Borteyman Sports complex ahaed of the 13th African Games, Accra 2023.

In August, 2021, the President cut the sod for the construction of the Borteyman Sports complex sports which was funded through the University’s internally generated funds.

This is the first time Ghana is hosting the African Games which started in 1965 in the Republic of Congo.

Joining the President to commission the Borteyman Sports complex was Ministry of Youth, Hon. Mustapha Ussif, Chief of Defence Staff, the Comptroller General of Ghana Immigration Service, Lawyer kwame Asuah -Takyi,  the LOC chairman , Dr. Kwaku Ofosu- Asare among others.

Speaking at the official opening Sports Minister Hon. Mustapha Ussif commended the consultant and contractor of the Borteyman facility for their swift completion of the project.

He envisioned the Borteyman Complex as a centre for sports excellence, serving as a legacy for future generations.

Mr Ussif expressed hope for the facility’s sustained maintenance to ensure that future generations also benefit from it.

President Akufo Addo During the event urged the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) to deliver an exceptional edition of the African Games, which is expected to attract over 8,000 visitors from across the continent.

He also cited ongoing renovations of stadia in Accra, Cape Coast, and Baba Yara, along with the construction of 10 regional stadia, six of which have been completed.

Additionally, the President disclosed plans for another 100 astroturfs to be completed nationwide this year, with 150 already constructed during his Presidency.

He emphasised the importance of providing top-notch hospitality to the athletes, officials, journalists, and fans who will be attending the event.

The Borteyman Sports complex had multi-purpose Sports halls for all indoors Sports, aquatic center for swimming and tennis courts.

The Games set to take place in Ghana between March 8-23, 2024 will have the Borteyman Sports Complex as one of the main venues for the anticipated event.
